The Reserve Bank of India's FREE-AI committee was set up on 26 December 2024 after an announcement in the 6 December 2024 policy statement. Its report, covered by the press in August 2025, sets seven guiding principles, called the Sutras, and 26 recommendations under six pillars.

What it aims to do

The framework supports AI use in finance while addressing bias, lack of transparency and systemic risk.

Why vendors should care

A bank that follows the framework will want evidence from its technology partners: how models are tested, how decisions are explained and who is accountable. Read the full report on the RBI website for the exact duties, because summaries do not list them.
