Tally is trusted by many Indian businesses for accounts and GST. It does that job well. Some companies grow to a point where accounts alone are not enough, and they look at an ERP. This guide helps you decide if and when to move.

Signs it may be time

  • Stock, purchase, sales and production are tracked in separate spreadsheets.
  • The same data is typed in two or three places.
  • Reports take days to put together.
  • You need approvals, role-based access or branch-wise control.
  • Customers or auditors ask for traceability you cannot give easily.
  • Your team keeps asking for features that need workarounds.

Signs you can wait

  • Your processes are simple and one or two people handle them.
  • You mostly need accounts and statutory reports.
  • Small add-ons would solve the pain.

What an ERP adds

An ERP connects finance with inventory, purchase, sales, manufacturing, HR and more in one database. Everyone works from the same numbers, and reports update as people work.

How to plan the move

  1. List your real problems. Do not start with a product name.
  2. Choose a short list of systems that fit your size and industry, for example Odoo, Zoho, SAP Business One or Microsoft Dynamics.
  3. Pick a partner who has moved Tally users before.
  4. Plan the data. Clean your masters (customers, items, ledgers) before you import them.
  5. Run both systems for a short period so you can check the numbers match.
  6. Train your team before go-live, not after.
  7. Pick a clean cut-over date, such as the start of a month or a financial year.

Questions to ask

  • How will our ledgers, opening balances and open invoices be brought over?
  • Will our GST, e-invoicing and e-way bill process keep working? See GST e-invoicing and your ERP.
  • What will we be able to do after the move that we cannot do now?

FAQ

Can I keep using Tally alongside an ERP? Some businesses do for a transition period. Many then retire it once the ERP is stable.

How long does a move take? It depends on the size and modules. Ask your partner for a dated plan.
