ISO/IEC 27001 is a certificate. An accredited body checks that a company runs an information security management system and returns each year to check it again.

SOC 2 is a report written by an independent auditor. A Type I report describes controls at one point in time. A Type II report covers how they worked over a period, often six to twelve months.

How to use them

  • Ask for the certificate or report itself, not a logo.
  • Read the scope. A certificate for one office does not cover another.
  • Check the dates. An old report tells you little about today.

Many Indian buyers ask for ISO 27001 first. Overseas customers often ask for SOC 2. A partner serving both may hold both.
