You do not need a large security team to improve your protection. A few steady habits stop many common attacks. These are the five steps we suggest to start with.

1. Know what you have

Make a simple list of your laptops, servers, cloud accounts, apps and the people who use them. You cannot protect what you do not know about.

2. Use strong sign-in everywhere

  • Turn on multi-factor authentication for email, cloud, banking and admin accounts.
  • Use a password manager so people can use unique passwords.
  • Remove accounts of people who have left.

3. Keep software updated

  • Turn on automatic updates for operating systems and browsers.
  • Patch servers and network devices on a schedule.
  • Replace software that no longer gets updates.

4. Back up and test the restore

  • Keep copies of important data away from your main systems.
  • Keep at least one copy that cannot be changed by an attacker.
  • Test a restore every few months. A backup that has never been restored is a guess.

5. Train your people

Many attacks start with a fake email. Teach staff how to spot suspicious messages, and make it easy for them to report one without fear.

Next steps

  • Write a one-page plan for what to do if something goes wrong, with names and phone numbers.
  • Ask your vendors where they store your data and how they protect it. See data residency in India.
  • Consider an independent security check once the basics are in place.

FAQ

Is antivirus enough? No. It is one layer. Sign-in, updates, backups and training matter just as much.

Do small companies get attacked? Yes. Attackers often target smaller businesses because they expect weaker protection.
